Following previous sell out nights over the years at the Machynlleth Tabernacle, The Pink Snowball Awards are now expanding their extravagant Oscar style awards to a second night at the Magic Lantern in Tywyn.

The Awards will be co-presented by celebrity ex-MP Lembit Opik on both nights. There are more films than ever before and so this year the Pinks @ Tywyn is enabling us to showcase a completely different selection of short films, animations, live actions and documentaries made by young people and the wider community. Highlights of the festival will be the three exquisite animations created by the Animation Tank project with Ysgol Penybryn, Ysgol Dyffryn Dulas Corris, Ysgol Gynradd Machynlleth. The films are original animated fairytales that capture a unique comic flare that only children can create and are supported by the Lottery through the UK film Council’s First Light Movies initiative, The Film Agency for Wales, The Peter Saunders Trust and Powys County Council. This is a great opportunity for friends and family to enjoy the excitement of seeing these high quality films in their local cinema. This, together with the Film 15@ films, is sure to be a highlight of both evenings. There are also films made by over 100 pupils from Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn and Ysgol Bro Ddyfi.

So, if you’re up for a treat in the half term, come along to The Pink Snowball Film Awards Tywyn to be greeted with a champagne reception, laser lighting and the Roller Derby who will bring a sweet service right to your seats. Awards to look out for include the Welsh Language Film Award, Community Open, Far and Away (a range of films from other film festivals), the 60 Second Film Challenge and Student categories – plus the announcement of the prestigious Audience Award 2010. A host of industry professionals will decide the winners, including “The Life of Brian” actress and former Aberystwyth mayor Sue Jones-Davies.

[Pink Snowball Festival Coordinator] says “It’s great to have the opportunity to show so many of the community’s films at a traditional cinema. The chance to offer more awards and celebrate young people’s achievements even further is so rewarding. We hope that the Tywyn locals will support us in our new exciting venture and that there’ll be a huge buzz on the night”.

Emma Macey-Storch [Director of FILM 15] “There have been so many hardworking and inspired young people that have created such beautiful and powerful films to share with their community. The buzz of the night and your presence is as much a part of their experience as making the film. Do come along and support our young talent and encourage them to feel confident enough to follow their dreams to be the next leading lady, the next hot leading man or the next Spielberg. Mid Wales most definitely has talent!!!”

The Pink Snowball Awards Nights take place on 23rd October at the Machynlleth Tabernacle and 24th October at The Magic Lantern, Tywyn and has kindly been supported by The Film Agency For Wales, The Peter Saunders Trust, Dulas, The Cooperative, The Dyfi Enduro, The Wynnstay Hotel, Quarry Café, the White Lion and the Fabric Shop, Machynlleth.

If you want to continue developing your interest in film over the half-term then look out for our half-term film-making workshops for young people and the community, as well as a range of film nights for everyone to engage in and enjoy. For more information about the different events and activities on offer, see the Film 15 Facebook Group, www.film15.org.uk/pinks or look out for our festival programme.

This weekend FILM 15 are collaborating with It’s My Shout and BBC to make a short film based in Corris and Machynlleth. The film will draw on 22 young people from FILM 15 as supporting crew who are being trained by a group of industry professionals in specific production roles. 20 young people from the area have also had training in acting for film with a selection of professional acting coaches. Sixty people from the local community have been cast to appear in the film, which is being broadcast on BBC Wales in November.

Shooting on Saturday will be taking place around Corris Primary School

Shooting on Sunday the 22nd of August will take place at Y Plas, near the leisure centre in Machynlleth.

The film, “The Trouble with Gran” is a sweet little comedy about how 80 year old Grandmother, Patricia, protests over the cancellation of the mobile library service in Corris. The film is designed to capture the spirit of our locality, which is beautifully brought to life by 82 year old Joyce Harris from Machynlleth. The area has been combed for talent with a series of auditions attracting over 80 people. Tywyn High school pupil Mikeala Wilkes has been cast as granddaughter Terri, Machynlleth primary school pupil Ben Herbert is playing the Grandson Liam and their mother Kathryn is played by local actress Andrea Edwards. Andrea is a fantastically talented local actress who played Annie Wilkes in last years production of “Misery” at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Librarian, Mrs Teakwood is being played by Mary Howell from Dolgallau.

This wonderful selection of local talent will be supported by 45 other young people cast as background actors and a bunch of adults from the area who will play the counsellors or adult roles.

FILM 15’s collaboration in this project has been funded by The Community Foundation for Wales, The Skiathos fund and The Arts Council For Wales and has involved a selection of preliminary training sessions for young people on the acting and technical side so as to prepare them for this amazing industry experience.

Already groups of young people have benefited from workshops with Celia Bannerman [acting coach on Nanny McPhee] and Roger Burnell [Head of talent BBC Wales]. Other young people on the technical side have benefited from training as a focus puller with professional DOP Ray Orten and set and props design with one of the production designers for Dr Who.

“The Trouble With Gran”, is being broadcast in December on BBC 1.

An award of £2,000 from The Peter Saunders Trust has closed the funding gap and made it possible for pupils at Ysgol Penybryn in Tywyn to take part in a pioneering project.

As part of the project, pupils at the primary school have been working with professional animator, Mikey Ford, and film-maker, Emma Macey, to develop and produce an original animated fairytale. Mikey Ford has over eight years experience working on productions for Aardman animations, and has been working closely with the young people to create the film using the latest animation techniques.

Emma Macey, the founder of FILM 15 Productions, is directing and producing the films and is responsible for the course design and delivery. The pupils have taken part in a workshop with award winning children’s writer, David Thorpe, to explore writing techniques. Alongside this, music and sound tutor, Jim Elliott, has helped the children to write their own music for the soundtrack. The pupils have been involved in all aspects of the production, including; story development, scripting, character design, modeling, animating, music and voice over.

“I feel that film is a powerful tool for young people to express themselves. I am passionate about film literacy and encouraging young people to use film as a learning tool. Animation Tank has proved that film is a wonderful way to enhance young people’s literacy skills and a fun way to engage young people with their learning”, said Emma.

The project has been designed to develop literacy, as well as creative and technical skills. It will also help develop team-work as the pupils co-operate in making their group film. As with the best learning, this is fun. It also sits comfortably alongside the school curriculum and complements the efforts of the teaching staff at the school.

“We do all we can to encourage creativity at the school” said headmistress, Menna Wynne-Pugh, “ and the children are really enjoying the visual, auditory and practical work that is part of this excellent project. I’d like to thank The Peter Saunders Trust and the professional film-makers for enabling us to participate in this inspirational project.”

Animated films produced by the pupils at Ysgol Penybryn will be shown at the Pink Snowball Awards film festival in Machynlleth in the autumn. To add to the excitement, some of the pupils will get the opportunity to ride a short distance to the festival in a pink limousine and then step out onto the red carpet in true Hollywood style.

“This is a very special project as it is a rare opportunity for pupils in mid-Wales to get so much time on the development of a piece of work with creative professionals” said Emma Macey. “We are so pleased that The Peter Saunders Trust was able to step in and save the day.”

The Peter Saunders Trust stepped in to close the funding gap when Gwynedd Council had declined to support the project. Schools in Machynlleth and Corris would have been able to take part, because of their funding from Powys Council, but the school in Tywyn would have been left out of the pioneering project.

This wonderful opportunity has also been supported by the Lottery through the UK Film Council’s First Light Movies initiative.
